This page is a source for customer IT staff to determine technical requirements for successful use of the Digital Campus product.  The

The Digital Campus product is hosted out of a Swank Motion Pictures data center, so the local technical requirements are really pretty simple.  The Digital Campus product requires Internet access in order to access the Digital Campus site (digitalcampus.swankmp.net).

Content is encoded using an adaptive bitrate technology which makes the Digital Campus product very network bandwidth friendly.  The network bandwidth requirements can be found here:

Authentication

For off-campus access, campuses have two options:

  1. IP Authentication - If your school uses a proxy service (optional) you will find proxy configuration information here:

  1. Link (Proxy) Settings. Please be aware that if a proxy is utilized, you must apply an SSL certificate in order to access Digital Campus without certificate warnings.
  2. User ID and Password - Users and passwords are maintained by the campus through the Digital Campus product: User Administration

DRM Playback

Some browsers require Adobe Flash and the Google Widevine Optimizer. Depending on the security settings and your school policies, you may choose to pre-install these requirements on campus owned devices.

Currently  Currently for Internet Explorer and Safari the following are required:

Please note that the The Google Widevine Optimizer differs by OS and Browser.

For Google Chrome, please ensure that the Widevine Content Decryption Module is installed, enabled, the version number is greater than 0.0.0.0, and that it is always allowed to run as shown in the picture below. You can verify that the Widevine Content Decryption Module is installed and enabled by accessing chrome://plugins in your Chrome Browser.

Digital Campus Streaming Frequently Asked Questions

Bandwidth Requirements

Digital Campus titles are encoded to support Adaptive Bitrate Streaming in order to be an network friendly as possible. For more information on adaptive bitrate streaming please see the following article here. Each title is encoded on our storage location at 5 bit rates:

  • 3 Mb/sec @720p
  • 2 Mb/sec @720p
  • 2 Mb/sec @720p
  • 5 Mb/sec @480p
  • 800 Kb/sec @480p

The bitrate streamed to the client device depends upon both device and network characteristics. These characteristics include: screen resolution, cpu availability, graphics processor, network bandwidth and speed available. As the network becomes more congested, the client device player will automatically request lower resolution playback (down to 800) to avoid buffering. If the bandwidth is insufficient to support the lowest bitrate, then the title will buffer. Within a specific environment, it is impossible to determine exactly what bandwidth will be used to playback content. Absolute minimum requirements would be the minimum bitrate * number of simultaneous streams occurring.

When title playback is paused, no content is downloaded to the client device (outside of a small buffer). Due to this implementation, a paused stream does not consume any bandwidth.
